Zoe, good question, unfortunately it looks like they don't. This is because both "width" and "device-width" are reported by the browser independently of the user agent that's set.

The purpose of using the user agent switcher is just for detection on the server side. Often a site will have at least two mobile sites: 1) a basic site for feature phones and 2) a nice flashy site for smart phones. The primary way to distinguish between feature phones and smart phones and serving the appropriate site is through analyzing the user agent sent by the browser's request header. For something like Yahoo! Blueprint which has even more gradation in websites (8 device classes), the user agent is even more important in figuring out which content to serve up.

@Molly Thanks for your comment! Yeah, that must be pretty frustrating to be a speaker and not being able to see the talk going on at the same time. I guess it's easier if you're in the audience, then you might slip out halfway through and go to another one, but I guess that would be rude to both speakers!

I'll definitely be at the next one you guys host!

The food was actually quite good, I didn't really mind paying $10 as I figure I was paying for more than just the food - for the T shirt and for the event too! Yeah, that is quite a pity to see all the wasted food. Maybe you could set it up so you prepay the $10 online, and that way people have already invested in coming and can't blow it off as easily compared to a free event.

Thanks again for your comment, and for setting up this great free conference!

@Zoe Cool, thanks for the info! I'll make the adjustments in the code.

Regarding the compatibility of the border-radius shorthand... Safari 4 and earlier (which includes Mobile Safari, of course) doesn't support the four values for four corners shorthand, and it doesn't support the slash for elliptical corners (it wants a space). Safari 5 does support this stuff and doesn't use the -webkit- prefix. So, change the -webkit- rule to match Safari 4's syntax, and you're good to go.

David - nice overview of your experience! It was a fantastic day all 'round.

Unfortunately, multi-track events always end up with that frustrating "darn I wanted to see this and this" phenomenon. It's even funnier for speakers, who find themselves inevitably speaking at the exact same time the one person's session they really wanted to catch.

Thanks for this great post, for joining us, and here's to more good times. We will continue this event, trying out new things over time, with the emphasis on community involvement and at no charge to attendees. Feel free to ping if you've got more ideas/feedback.

Oh-part of the cost issue with food is that a). we catered last year and all food was free to attendees, but it cost us a fortune so we decided to encourage brown-bag lunches and a sandwich/chip option to help offset other costs. The other factor is that with free events, too much food gets wasted - did you see all the food left over? Fortunately with wrapped sandwiches you can give them out to folks but with catering you get what you order. Free events also suffer from the sign-up because it's free but get up that day and opt-out. So it's hard from an organizational perspective to balance that issue. We decided to try this but I'm not yet sure if it was the better option, ultimately. We'll see. But I understand :)
