It's a shame you're using setAttribute to set the class on the html element. It would be much nicer if it added and removed those classes as appropriate. Otherwise it conflicts with Modernizr, which I don't want to lose.

With all the money and talent in your community, an enormous potential is waiting to be tapped into. Identifying the problem is a commendable approach, and a necessary start - the real magic happens when a group of people work in harmony towards a solution.

Thanks for the great post and helpful tips. I know I’m late to the party on this one, but I’ve been trying to develop a website for iPhone, the designer has created the template to be 960px wide (it’s going to be landscape only), at 72dpi. But if I create an image that’s 960px wide, it’s too big on the iPhone 4. If I resize the image to 480px, it fits just fine, but looks blurry. Getting so frustrated trying to wrap my head around what size images should be.

It’s not a fluid design, so it’ll be a static 960×536, no zooming. Seems like not matter what I do with ratio, etc, the graphics are always too big until I resize them and lose that quality.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

Nice article!

I tried the following and it checked out OK in Safari, Chrome & Firefox!

if (!foo) instead of
if (foo == null || foo == "")

Is this an acceptable method for production?

[...] all! In fact, it’s pretty much the same result one could get running the same benchmark on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 which is great, considering Apple has done an excellent job with their Nitro javascript engine. [...]
